Abstract

The undergraduate research project will be implemented in the FAPESP Young Investigator project entitled ". The student will be supervised by the principal researcher, Dr. Marcelo Valadares Galdos (CTBE), interacting with collaborating researchers Dr. Gerd Sparovek and Dr. Carlos E.P. Cerri of the Soil Science Department of Esalq/USP. The undergraduate research will focus on evaluating time series of land use change and management of sugarcane and related crops in the South-Central region. The main land use changes and soil, input and residue management changes will be identified. The main land use change and management issues evaluated will be: straw management - substitution of manual harvesting with burning by mechanized harvest maintaining or removing the straw; agricultural input management - application of nitrogen fertilizers, liming and residues such as vinasse and filter cake; land use change - expansion of sugarcane over pastures, annual and perennial crops, using geoprocessing and land use modeling.
