Abstract

Emerging contaminants refer to chemicals whose interest in studies associated with the occurrence and effects in the environment is recent. In Brazil there is little information related to the exposure to these compounds in the population, which motivated this research project. Among the emerging contaminants stands bisphenol A, which has been widely found in both environmental and biological matrices in several countries. Among the various toxic effects already observed after exposure to this compound those related to the endocrine system may be highlighted. In this sense, this proposal aims to develop methods for the determination of bisphenol A in urine, using a technique already well established in this area, liquid chromatography coupled to mass detector and a technique relatively low cost and simple operation, Shpol'skii spectroscopy. The methods developed will be used for the assessment of exposure to bisphenol A in children in the state of São Paulo, to establish initial/reference values in our population. It is also worth noting that the project will have the collaboration of prof. Dr. Andres Campíglia, University of Central Florida (USA) and prof. Dr. Kannan Kuruntachalan, from the New York State Department of Health (USA), which are performing routine biomonitoring studies with U.S. population. Finally, it is expected that the results of this study can contribute to the knowledge of the levels of exposure to an endocrine disruptor still little studied in Brazil, stimulating public laboratories to implement the methodologies that will be developed in their routine tests.
