Abstract

An effective understanding of the consequences of human impacts on coastal fish faunas depends on strong characterizations of their ecological patterns. Under the BIOTA-FAPESP/Bay of Araçá thematic Project, the present proposal project intend to analyze a case study based on two important issues, yet poorly investigated in subtropical coastal ecosystems: I - Is the use of diversity ², fish richness estimation and models of co-occurrence, taken together, a robust framework to characterize patterns of the fish fauna? II - Does the use of multiple samplers (i.e. beach seine, otter trawl, cat nets, encircling gillnets) increase the accuracy in characterizing the structure of fish fauna? Moreover, as direct demands of the Thematic Project, this proposal also has the following objectives: III - based on proposed framework, to describe the structure of the Bay of Araçá fish fauna, its spatial and seasonal variability and to identify the main abiotic drivers responsible for its variability; and (IV) to build a teaching model of the dynamic of the environment for educational purposes. It is expected that this framework of analysis is robust and samplers are effectively complementary, which will enable: (a) to describe patterns and propose ecological processes of fish fauna, with greater accuracy, and (b) to support improvement of sampling protocols of environmental impact studies and monitoring of coastal fish fauna in Brazil, still limited to a few samplers. In addition, the description of the patterns of the fish fauna of the bay will be able to subsidize ecosystem modeling, biodiversity conservation, environmental education and local fisheries management, as well as mitigation and predictions of the future impacts on ichthyofauna structure due to the expansion of the port adjacent to the bay.
