Abstract

The aim of this project is to verify how Paul Ricoeur and Karl-Otto Apel build their answers to the problem of speech and, by extension, language objectivity. Having both being strongly influenced by the hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer, Ricoeur and Apel trailed different paths from this common starting point: Ricoeur utilized the French tradition of the reception of the phenomenology of both Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger, while Apel combined hermeneutics with the pragmatism of Charles Sanders Peirce and in a smaller degree the language analysis of Ludwig Wittgenstein to compose his own "transcendental pragmatics". Both of them, following a different strategy, point generally to the same conceptual horizon: intersubjectivity - though filled with different semantic content for each one of them. What I seek to identify are the converging and diverging points between Ricoeur and Apel, questioning myself about the possibility of gathering them as examples of the encounter of the so-called "continental" and "analytical" philosophical traditions.
