Abstract

This research project aims to develop a translation and a study for "A Voyage into Tartary", an utopia written in English and published in London in 1689, with no indication of its author - just signed by the narrator, "Lord Heliogenes of L' Epy, doctor in Philosophy". There are few studies and references to this book. We will try to demonstrate that it is safe to say, from the events described in the plot, that it is a French utopia, written by a libertine, in the second half of the seventeenth century, during the reign of Louis XIV. The work brings, together with the travel reports that the narrator does about his travels to Rome, Greece, Byzantium, Georgia and Philippines (these last two, vast regions of Tartary, in the seventeenth century), his discovery of the utopian Heliopolis, a city of sun influenced by Campanella's "The City of the Sun" (1602), Cyrano de Bergerac's "Les États et Empires du Soleil" (1662) and Denis Veiras's "L'Histoire de Sévarambes" (1675). In its totality, "A Voyage into Tartary" discusses the problems of the monarchy of Louis XIV and of a Europe ravaged by religious wars and by the political interests related to the nascent colonial empire.
