Abstract

Considering the main theoretical concerns about the relationship between art and madness , we defined the broader objective of this project and the field of research - to examine relationships between music and madness from the field of aesthetic reception as subarea of the Social Psychology of Art . Based on the critical perspective of Michel Foucault , we considerer madness as a complex socio- historical phenomenon that crosses the western culture . Due to the fundamental role of the spectator activity in the production and transmission of meanings of works of art , we propose a study on the aesthetic perception of Robert Schumann´s work , musician of the nineteenth century , whose life was shrouded by the "aura of madness." We selected some significant works of this composer, whose poetics is based on romanticism , to be presented to research subjects , ie , classical musicians and music listeners , without technical-musical training , which we are going to interview individually after hearing those works . Thus , we are going to investigate if there is any madness perception linked to the musical pieces´ perception, held by a contemporary audience , and if this link exist , what would be its main aspects . Following that , we are going to set a possible aesthetic perspective on the experience of otherness , in order to extend the discussion of this complex psychological and cultural issues in the context of Social Psychology .
