Abstract

The low adherence to exercise programs is a factor that contributes to the high levels of physical inactivity worldwide. Thus, strategies which contribute to increased motivation and positive affective responses during exercise are used to impact on adherence, such as the use of music and self-selected intensity. Despite the benefits of these strategies, there are few studies involving their combination (self-selected intensity and music), especially in the elderly population. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the influence of music on performance and psychophysiological responses in the elderly during a self-selected intensity exercise session. The sample will be composed of 12 elderly people who will perform a walking exercise on a treadmill under three conditions: no music, preferred music and non-preferred music. Perception of effort, mood states, motivation, affective responses, session's perception of effort and attitude towards exercise experience will be measured. One-way ANOVA will be used to compare the values of distance walked, session's perception of effort and attitude towards exercise experience. Two-way ANOVA for repeated measures will be used for the following variables: speed chosen, mood states, perception of effort, motivation and affective responses. The value of significance will be P <0.05. (AU)
