Abstract

The obesity and metabolic syndrome have increased in worring proportions in worldwide. Besides the systemic consequences, obesity and its comorbidities have been associated with oral diseases and the aim of this study will be to identify oral problems in obese subjects with metabolic syndrome before and after bariatric surgery. The sample will be composed by two groups: experimental group (EG) and control group (CG). The EG will be composed by 125 morbidly obese patients with metabolic syndrome attended at Amaral Carvalho Hospital located in Jau - SP, and the CG will be composed by 125 normal individuals. The groups will be assessed in two periods (baseline and 6 months after bariatric surgery in EG and 6 months after the initial assessment in CG). The anthropometric assessment of individuals will be performed by BMI and waist circumference. The green fluorescence (QLF - Quantitative Light-induced Fluorescence), ICDAS II and DMTF will be used to assess dental caries. The dental plaque will be assessed through red fluorescence (QLF).Stimulated salivary flow will be evaluated by mL/mim. Index of Tongue Coating will be used to assess the presence of tongue coating and samples will be collected with an appropriate disposable tape and stored in eppendorf tubes at -80°C up to analysis of the presence of F. nucleatum, T. forsythia, P. gingivalis, P. intermedia e S mutans by q-PCR. In statistical analysis, first the normality test be applied and then the appropriate statistical test will be choose. In case of having a normal distribution, the parametric t-Student test will be used to compare the groups, otherwise the no-parametric Mann-Whitney test will be applied (P<0.05). (AU)
