Abstract

Forensic Anthropology is the application of the Physical Anthropology Science and Human Osteology in criminal cases where the victim's remains are in an advanced stage of decomposition. The determination of the physical characteristics of an individual can be estimated through the use of two methods: morphological and metric. Considering the current context, the morphological or qualitative method is deeply described in the literature. On the other hand, there is a shortage of scientific studies that analyze quantifying measurements. Due to historical migrations, Brazilian population is very diverse, comprising many races and ethnic groups, therefore it is much more varied than the Scottish population, which tends to be more homogenous once there was significant immigration to Scotland from the rest of the United Kingdom. The present study aims to compare the craniometric variations of two populations (Brazilian and Scottish), and also to evaluate the reliability of ancestry, age and sex estimation in the two populations for forensic purposes. The sample will consist of a total of 200 skulls with jaws. The "Instituto de Estudo e Pesquisas Forenses de Guarulhos" will provide the Brazilian documented sample, which is composed of 100 complete skulls. The Scottish documented sample will comprise a total of 100 skulls with jaws from the "Centre for Anatomy & Human Identification" at the University of Dundee. Anthropometric analysis of skulls and jaws will be held with the use of 2 stabilizers: skull and mandible ones. Both of them have their patents requested through the University of São Paulo (USP). Later, the skulls and jaws will be brain-scanned and analyzed using the software VG Studio®. It is hoped that a comparative analysis of the two populations be established and a standardization of the measures of the skulls and jaws be made. So, it will provide a reproducible method and more quantitative parameters to estimate the age, sex and ancestry to the human identification services around the world. (AU)
