Abstract

The treatment by plants called herbal medicine (from Greek phyton= plant and therapeia= treatment), is not new. However, the deepening in certain species and evidence of its effects has achieved prominence only recently. In recent years several species of herbs have been recognized for medicinal properties as Qualea Grandiflora Mart., family of Vochysiaceae, type species of the Brazilian cerrado and according to studies, has antioxidant, analgesic, important gastric shield among other benefits. Thus the Qualea Grandiflora Mart. has shown good potential against various pathological changes, the understanding of its action is necessary, beyond the confirmation of safe concentrations. Described by the present study is to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxicity of the leaf extract of Qualea Grandiflora Mart. in MC3T3 cells (pre-osteoblasts in mice) lineage and that some proteins may be direct or indirect targets of the extract. For tests of cell viability and activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) and its antagonist TIMP-2, different concentrations of the hydroalcoholic extract of Qualea Grandiflora Mart. will be administered for a period of 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. After each time cell viability is assessed using MTT reduction and crystal violet method, analysis of expression of MMP-2, MMP-9 and TIMP-2 will be made by RT -PCR, zymography and Western blotting.
