Abstract

Brazilian educational data, such as average years of schooling and dropout rates show that boys have higher probabilities of having a troubled school life, with failures and interruptions. Assuming these differences as a starting point, several studies have considered gender relations from discussions about masculinities in studies that try to understand the underachievement of boys. We intend to study, however, relationships between masculinities and school performance through a research about boy's success at school, since previous research has signaled the existence of a significant group of boys evaluated positively by their teachers. Admitting, therefore, the existence of boys considered good students and adopting as theoretical assumption the notion that children also actively construct their masculinities among their peer groups, we will seek to understand the relationship of boys assessed as excellent students by their teachers with other children, and then, try to understand how they articulate their masculinities practices with performances considered positive. For this, we will develop a qualitative research through participant observation and semi-structured interviews with students and teachers. (AU)
