Abstract

The work of the French composer Gérard Grisey figures as one of the most important manifestations within the field of the spectral music. Among his most relevant pieces is Vortex Temporum (1996), for piano and five instruments. This piece works on the idea of a sound wave submitted to an arpeggio figure extracted from the classical music literature to various possibilities of temporal treatments. Through that, it places the phenomenon of sound earing and its multiple kinds of temporal perception in a fundamental position within the relationship between sensibility and the musical practice.Throughout this procedure, Grisey develops the notion of processus that re-inaugurates the idea of musical form. In addition to other new discovered resources, it integrates into the focus of musical composition important paradigms of contemporary culture as some concepts from the fields of modern physics and pshyco-acoustics. This project intends to investigate Grisey's music from the study of Vortex Temporum, on the purpose to obtain productive theoretical results to the compositional and creative activities and, at a second moment, put them in practice trough the creation of an original musical piece.
