Abstract

This master project aims to study the Friction Based Injection Clinching Joining (F-ICJ) process on hybrid joints of polyetherimide (PEI) and aluminum AA6082-T6. The joints were produced in the Research Institute Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG), in Germany, during the internship of the proponent. The influences of the process parameters in the mechanical properties, macro and microstructure of the joints will be analyzed. A design of experiment and a variance analysis will be adopted to better analyze these influences. A thermo camera will be used to monitor the temperature developed in the process. The global mechanical properties were measured by lap shear strength testing and cross tensile testing. The macro and microstructure of the joint will be analyzed using optical microscopy and microhardness test. The degradation level in the polymer (PEI) will be evaluated by thermal analysis (DSC and TGA) and by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis (FTIR). The fracture mechanism will be investigated by Optical Microscopy and Scan Electron Microscopy (SEM). The final objective is to understand the influence of the process parameters in the joint macro and microstructure and mechanical properties, in order to optimize the F-ICJ process for PEI/AA6082-T6 joints.
