Abstract

The project aims to research the relationship between history and literature in the life and work of Oliveira Lima between 1882 and 1908 from the collection of the author at the University Catholic of America in Washington. Oliveira Lima, although it was an important figure of literate production in Brazil of the passage of the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries, has received very few studies in the literary sphere and in other areas. Furthermore, few approaches on the close correlation between history and literature carried out by Oliveira Lima and met the expectations of the literary life of the period. Articles in journals and books' Oliveira Lima relate to the documents of the Oliveira Lima Library, which clarifies the preparation and receipt of the work. Primarily the library and correspondence can broaden the understanding of the choices and dilemmas facing the fields of history and literature, often not made explicit in the published work, in a decisive period of his career, ranging from training in Portugal the late nineteenth century until the publication of his most important book, D. João VI in Brazil 1908. To accompany the main readings in that range and interlocutors de Oliveira Lima aims to reflect how the writer was incorporated into the literary life of Brazil as the same time a man of letters who cultivated the historiographical tradition of the nineteenth century, conducive to the art of storytelling and style, and a professional historian, devoted to work with the documents.
