Taxonomic review of Neoplecostomus franciscoensis Langeani, 1990 (Loricariidae: Neoplecostominae)

Abstract

The diversity of Neoplecostomus Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1888 increased considerably in recent years. In the only taxonomic review available of the genus, Langeani (1990) recorded only one species to the Rio São Francisco Basin, N. franciscoensis, and also a single species to the Upper Rio Paraná Basin, N. paranensis. Further studies revealed the occurrence of others species in the Upper Rio Paraná Basin, but no analysis was done to Rio São Francisco Basin. Preliminary studies have shown a population from streams around Serra da Canastra, in São Roque de Minas, that have two different characteristcs from the proposed condition in the original description of N. franciscoensis. This population always have the spinelet wider than dorsal-fin spine base and only one plate between the cleithrum process and the first plate of the lateral series. According to the original description, the spinelet may be absent or having variable sizes, but in general being narrower than dorsal-fin spine base. Also, there is two or three large plates, arranged in line, and above then several small plates between the cleithrum process and the first plate of the lateral series. Therefore, the aim of this study is to re-evaluate the taxonomy of N. franciscoensis Langeani, 1990, since additional material has been collected along the years, evidencing a morphological variation that must be analysed.
