Abstract

A generative system involves a systematic method for obtaining solutions to a particular problem. Shape grammars, cellular automata, genetic algorithms and fractals are examples of generative systems that enable the creation of compositions which can be applied in architecture and urbanism. Throughout history architects have shown interest in complex forms and used different methods to obtain them. Some traditional generative systems have been implemented in computer expanding the possibilities of obtaining complex forms with the aid of computing. In parallel, the emergence of post-industrial means of production in the late twentieth century made possible the production of these forms with relative ease and economy. In addition, the renewal of the concept of ornament in contemporary architecture, assuming other functions beyond aesthetics, has aroused the interest for complex compositions. Among the generative systems that have been used by architects, fractals are particularly interesting because they allow the generation of complex forms from simple rules in an intelligible process in which control by the designer is maintained. However, for an architect appropriates this method effectively, it is necessary to introduce a range of knowledge and skills, and the formulation of a theoretical framework. This research investigates the architecture design using fractal geometry and proposes a method for approximation of such content supported by contemporary theories such as generative systems, parametric modeling, CAD environments for programming and digital fabrication.
