Abstract

We are applying for a FAPESP-BEP fellowship, to Prof. Renato F. Jardim, for the development of the research plan entitled "Search for novel superconducting materials", to be conducted at Prof. Zachary Fisk's group, University of California, Irvine, from February 1st, 2015 till February 1st, 2016. It is our goal to perform a systematic study in a family of borites with formula MB, M = Nb, Ta, Mo, W; searching for novel superconducting materials. The strategy is to perform a partial substitution of the transition metal M by Zr, Hf, Ti, V, Fe etc, and a procedure that has been successfully applied for inducing/increasing superconducting properties in some of the specimens already studied. The materials will be synthesized by the arc melting method and characterized by several techniques including x-ray powder diffraction, temperature and magnetic field dependence of magnetization and electrical resistivity. The research project will be conducted in collaboration with three research groups led by Prof. Zachary Fisk, University of California, Irvine, Prof. Milton Torikachvili, San Diego State University, San Diego, and Prof. Antonio J. S. Machado, Departamento de Engenharia de Materiais, EEL-USP, Lorena, and students from these research groups. (AU)
