Morphological study and angioarquitecture of the ventricle of neotropical fishes

The teleost ventricle may present up to three distinct forms: sac-like, tubular and pyramidal. These characteristics are related to the ventricular mioarchitecture or, to the fishes swimming habit. Studies of the ventricular mioarchitecture showed different characteristics of organization in the teleost cardiac muscle, indicating that some species may exhibit the ventricle constituted only by a spongy layer or, in addition of a spongy layer an outer compact layer. Also, some studies showed that active species presents the pyramidal ventricle with a mixed myocardium (consisting of an outer compact layer and an inner spongy layer), while sedentary species present tubular or sac-like ventricle, consisting only by a spongy layer. However, this relation is not always constant. Thus, the objective of the present work is to study the cardiac morphology of three Neotropical fish species: Leporinus elongatus, Pterodoras granulosus (migratory species) and Hoplias malabaricus (sedentary specie); stressing the ventricular myocardium and its angioarchitecture. There will be used 10 hearts of each species. The animals will be euthanized in benzocaine hydrochloride solution. Then, a longitudinal incision will be made in the ventral part to remove the hearts, which they will be fixed in Bouin's solution and/or modified Karnovsky's solution, and posterior to that submitted to gross anatomy and light microscopy studies. For anatomical studies, the cardiac cavities will be analyzed with the help of a stereomicroscope. For histological analysis, the hearts will be embedded in Paraplast and/or historesin and the sections will be stained with hematoxylin-eosin, 1% toluidine blue and Masson's trichrome for general analysis of ventricular architecture as well as to stress subepicardial and/or myocardial vessels.
