Abstract

This research aims to understand how the image of rural Brazilian man was depicted in the literature of the late twentieth century, through the study of Carlos Alberto Soffredini's plays. By identifying aspects of popular culture in his writings, we will evaluate how the identity and figure of rural Brazilian man is constructed, based on the analysis of plots and characters, the rural dialect employed by the author, aspects of rural music and popular culture, as well as Brazilian social critique. The main corpus is composed, initially, of three plays: "Na Carrêra do Divino" (On divine's rime), from 1979, "Auto de Natal Caipira" (Rural Christmas play), from 1992, and "A Madrasta" (The Stepmother), from 1995. The research intends to study Brazilian popular culture in these texts (folk tales, circus, music and linguistic varieties in these plays) to map and to analyze how the image of the rural Brazilian man was built on Soffredini's work. One of the studying stages will be a diachronic study about how the construction of this image (in 70's and 90's) changed in relation to the representation of the rural man in Brazilian's early twentieth century literature - in particular, with reference to the figure of Jeca Tatu, from Monteiro Lobato, which became a paradigm for the Brazilian literary production.
