Abstract

This project will be developed inside the FAPESP Thematic Project 2011/07342-9 "A circulação transatlântica dos impressos - a globalização da cultura no século XIX", which is coordinated by Profa. Dra. Márcia Azevedo de Abreu (Unicamp), to which Profa. Dra. Lúcia Granja is associate researcher and in which she participates studying Baptiste-Louis Garnier's editorial and commercial actions. Garnier was an important French bookseller and publisher who established his publishing house in Rio de Janeiro, 1840. Our work will focus on Livraria de B. L. Garnier catalogues of the 19th century second half, material which was gathered from researches conducted within the Thematic Project. We will enter the data of these catalogues into a database created to the Thematic Project, so the other associated researchers can access these informations for their own researches. Furthermore, this study aims to: investigate the presence of the north-american James Fenimore Cooper's (1789-1851) works on Rio de Janeiro editorial market in the second half of the 19th century; specify the possible origins of author's works for sale in B. L. Garnier catalogues and also explain in which language that books arrived and circulated in Brazil; better understand Garnier commercial actions, analyzing the presence of Cooper's works on that bookstore.
