Abstract Rapateaceae are neotropical plants which occur almost exclusively in South America. Phylogenetic analysis have indicated paraphyletic groups inside the family, which has led to a taxonomic restructuration. Since recent floral anatomy studies presented data supporting this new classification, this project aims to study the floral anatomy of Saxofridericia aculeata, a representative of the tribe Saxofridericieae, following a comparative approach. Rapateaceae flowers present poorly studied secreting trichomes. Therefore, the identity of the secreted compounds will also be analyzed. For these purposes, flowers on different developmental stages will be processed through usual plant anatomy techniques. For light microscopy, the material will be sectioned, mounted on permanent slides and stained. The secreting trichomes will be analyzed through histochemical tests and under scanning electron microscopy. Documentation of results will occur through images obtained with a microscope equipped with a capturing device. Thus, diagnostic characteristics of the tribe are expected to contribute to the taxonomy and to support the new classification of the family. | |
