Abstract

The project will be developed in the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases / Department of Preventive Veterinary Medicine and Animal Health - FMVZ/USP, and is linked to the sub-projects: "Population dynamics of capybaras and ticks, and rickettsial infection in capybaras and ticks in endemic and non-endemic areas for Brazilian spotted fever (BSF)" and "Evaluation of the animal diversity in endemic and non-endemic areas for spotted fever, the role of capybaras as hosts for Amblyomma cajennense sensu lato in different areas, and the circulation of Rickettsia rickettsii among different vertebrate species in different areas". The main objectives of this study are: (i) to evaluate a comparative analysis of the structure and population dynamics of free-living ticks in endemic and non-endemic areas for BSF; in the non-endemic areas, the population dynamics will be evaluated in anthropized areas (low diversity) and in natural ecosystems of the Pantanal biome (high diversity); (ii) to evaluate the diversity of wild and domestic vertebrates in endemic and non-endemic areas for BSF, including the anthropized areas and the natural ecosystems, and to quantify the role of these animals as hosts for Amblyomma cajennense sensu lato ticks in different areas; (iii) to evaluate the circulation of Rickettsia rickettsii in free-living ticks and in the vertebrate animals (wild and domestics) from the different areas of the study.
