Abstract

Lewis Carroll (1832-1898, real name Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) was one of the main names of the Golden Age of Children's Literature. Although the realm of didacticism had already been challenged by other authors at his time, he is one of the first in England that published a text that doesn't aim to model the reader. Until then, children's books were known to provide moral and religious instructions for the kids to become adults within their expected social boundaries. In Carroll's Alice books (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass and what Alice found there (1871)), the anti-heroine is emancipatory; she goes in search of a new knowledge. Well-known authors at the time, Christina Rossetti (1830 - 1894), Jean Ingelow (1820 - 1897) and Juliana Ewing (1841 - 1885) wrote works of fiction that are Carrollian hypertexts. This project aims to analyze the main characters of these texts through gender-based approaches and children's literature studies, in order to show how they are constructed and how they resemble and differ from the original Alice.
