With this project we presented to the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) research proposal in Bolsa de Pesquisa no Exteior (BPE) seated in the investigation of three working hypotheses. The first hypothesis is that we can understand two analytical perspectives to the inner city, the traditional centre and the main centre Add to that the presence of new central areas, on two conditions of competition and complementarity between them and the centre. Arising from this first, we have a second chance. To what extent, in the light of significant changes in the sphere of consumption that can be observed in today's society, we would, by reading the urban structures, compared to processes that could point us to polycentric and / or polynucleated urban structures? In this bulge, a third hypothesis is necessary. Are these procedures (outlined in the first two hypotheses) girded by a third, wider? The economic and productive restructuring have led to profound changes, leading to a restructuring of the city, which invigorates the need and possibilities to discuss the urban structure, specifically the central areas. These three issues would be weighed up from exhaustive bibliographic research and academic debates that would give scope to the development of our participation in the thematic project "Logicas Econômicas e Práticas Espaciais Contemporâneas: Cidades Médias e Consumo", funded by the Foundation.
