Abstract

The Bioluminescence in beetles is mainly found in the superfamily Elateroidea. Although the biochemistry of the bioluminescent system and the morphology of the fireflies lanterns are well studied, the origin and evolution of lanterns in different families is not well understood. Furthermore, the biosynthetic origin of luciferin, a benzotiazolic compound which is a substrate for the bioluminescence reaction, remains unknown. It was demonstrated that the fat body of Aspisoma lineatum larvae (Lampyridae) produces low levels of bioluminescence, suggesting that the photogenic tissue originated from the fat body, and the lanterns originated subsequent for a selection pressure to the specialization of an emitting light organ. Thus, this work aims a comparative study of transcriptomes of lanterns and fat body of A. lineatum larvae and adults and other bioluminescent Elateroidea, allowing the observation of which features differentiate the photogenic and non-photogenic tissues in terms of molecular physiology. Such results would help to a better understanding of the ontogenetic origin and molecular evolution of lanterns in different families of bioluminescent beetles, and to identify the potential targets involved in the biosynthesis of luciferin and bioluminescence control.
