Abstract

Lactate is the product of the reduction of pyruvate, important reaction for controlling the intracellular pH and the redox state of the cell in which it is produced. When this metabolite is released into the blood stream and diffuses to tissues expressing their transporters, it exerts various physiological roles, such as providing a rich source of carbon for hepatic gluconeogenesis and mitochondrial energy synthesis. Blood lactate also promotes elevated synthesis/secretion of growth hormone (GH), showing a significant activation of the somatotropic axis by an action in which had not yet been identified. We intend to explore potential hypothalamic hormones that are implicated in this regulation and/or highlight a possible direct action of lactate on the synthesis/secretion of GH. For this, we evaluate the gene expression of hypothalamic hormones (GHRH, somatostatin and ghrelin), which are the major hormone involved in the expression of GH and furthermore analyze the lactate directly stimulate the pituitary gland to increase expression of GH.
