Abstract

This project is built upon a collection of 541 fragments of liturgical books housed in Paris, Archives Nationales, series AB XIX 1722 to AB XIX 1746. These are unpublished and virtually unknown fragments, with an immense potential for expanding our knowledge on the different liturgical traditions that coexisted in medieval France between the eleventh and the fifteenth centuries (whence comes the majority of the fragments in the collection). The main goal of this project is to draw up a detailed catalogue of this fund, to be made available on a free-access internet website with appropriate search engines. This website is seen as a hard core to which other collections of fragments housed in French public archives can be added in the future. So as to demonstrate the importance of paying due attention to liturgical fragments and to develop in detail the appropriate methodologies for treating them, four case studies will be pursued, based on especially relevant fragments from the collection.
