Abstract

Overhead athletes, including volleyball players, frequently report chronic shoulder pain, being the rotator cuff pathology one of the main causes of this pain. The subacromial impingement may be the responsible for the development of the rotator cuff disorders and it has been associated with fatigue of the shoulder muscles. This impingement may occur when the subacromial space is reduced, becoming inadequate for clearance of the rotator cuff tendons. In this way, it is considered important to analyze the impact of fatigue of shoulder muscles caused by a training program, on the field of volleyball players, in the acromiohumeral distance (AHD). Thus, the purpose of the present study is to analyze the influence of training specific fatigue on the AHD in volleyball players at different levels of competition before and after a training session and before and after a season of competition. The participants will be volleyball players at 3 different levels, between 18 and 30 years. The AHD will be measured at the beginning of a volleyball training session and after. The measure will be also performed before the athletes start a season of competition and after (about 8 months later). The AHD will be measured through an ultrasound (Colormaster 128 EXT-IZ device) at 0°, 45° and 60° of shoulder abduction. The AHD will be defined as the tangential distance from the most lateral part of the acromion to the humeral head. The normality of the data will be checked to decide on the most appropriate statistical test to be performed. Considering a significance level of 5%. (AU)
