Abstract

The objective of this research project is to describe and analyze the perception of the public and Brazilian leaders regarding our foreign policy and international politics. It is part of an international academic partnership, which includes research teams from several Latin American countries: Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru. The general coordination of the project (Las Américas y el Mundo) is a task of the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE), Mexico. The international project seeks to understand the perceptions and attitudes of the public and leaders on international issues that gained more importance in this century, and capture the reaction of society to international changes and their domestic impact. The study covers a wide range of topics (cultural, economic, social, political, security), levels (bilateral, regional and global) related to international relations and foreign policy. A panel type of research will be held, with two surveys: a survey with leaders linked to international relations, with intentional sample of 200 cases; and a survey with the public, with a random sample of 1500 cases, stratified national distribution, repeated every four years. In parallel, at CEBRAP (Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning), a database will be built in ACCESS, with signed articles and editorial on foreign policy, published in O Estado de São Paulo, Folha de São Paulo, O Globo and Valor Econômico. This survey will complete the analysis of survey data, exploring the connections between the views expressed by leaders in the media and the formation of mass public perceptions.
