Abstract

Degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) is the most prevalent heart disease in dogs, and there is a strong correlation with the age of the animal, ie, the older the animal, the greater likelihood of disease onset. It is more common in small breed dogs and in males, and its etiology is not yet fully elucidated. The main consequence is congestive heart failure (CHF), characterized by exercise intolerance, cough, dyspnea, cyanosis, and pulmonary edema due to neurohormonal and hemodynamic changes caused by cardiac remodeling. Therefore, in both acute and chronic DMVD, loop diuretics such as furosemide, are the main drug chosen in the therapy protocol of the disease, due to hemodynamic improvement.Due to the development of research, diagnostic subsidies and therapeutic techniques, the life expectancy of pets has grown significantly. With this, the aging of pacients is a factor that predisposes to comorbidities.Thus, this study has the scope to analyze retrospectively doses of furosemide used in accordance with the staging of the DMVD and analyze the main comorbidities that occur with this disease.
