Abstract

Planetary nebulae, the descendants of low- and intermediate-mass stars,exhibit point-symmetric and highly collimated morphologies. Models of planetary nebula formation cannot explain the shaping of these complex morphologies by single stars. Binary systems are invoked at the origin of these morphologies or even as the cause of planetary nebula formation, but the observationalevidence for binarity among the central stars of planetary nebulae is scarce. Here we propose the use of sensitive UV and infrared observations ofAsymptotic Giant Branch stars, the precursors of planetary nebulae, in the Magellanic Clouds to search for main-sequence of white dwarf companions. At known distances, these samples of planetary nebula precursors will provide reliable statistics of the frequency of binarity among central stars of planetary nebulae.
