Abstract

Having two important Latin American metropolitan areas as case studies - São Paulo, Brazil and Santiago, Chile - this research aims to deepen the study of the Latin American Urban Landscape by unveiling its unique characteristics beheld in both cities. The main subject of analysis is the current social housing production, its correlated urban and political implications as well as the social practices undertaken in the open spaces found in the social housing blocks. This investigation has sought a global vision on such comparative study but, most importantly, has based its analysis on local urban form and the open spaces and their uses, striving to grasp the intrinsic reality of each case. The solid contribution of this research to the Brazilian and Latin American Scientific development overall is undoubtedly the distinctiveness observed in local scale phenomena and its importance to describing and explaining key differences and similarities between two important metropolises in the Global South.
