Abstract

This project proposes a practice-based research on the experience of shock in the contemporary scene. The implications, complications and resonance of these experiences are explored as a means to investigate the problematized reception they imply, which tends to establish liminal terrains of coexistence in the event - where ethical, aesthetic and political issues are contested. The theoretical framework of this research includes the writings of Josette Féral, Walter Benjamin, Dorothée Brill, Victor Turner, Erika Fischer-Lichte, Claire Bishop, Frazer Ward, Jorge Larrosa, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Jaques Rancière as a way to interact with concepts such as shock, liminality, community, participation and experience - the key concepts of this project. The research method adopted is phenomenological since the research material is composed of personal receptive experiences of the aesthetics of shock; the interaction with such material takes place through a creative elaboration of artistic responses to the lived experiences. Hence, this research aims to apprehend the affectation and ambivalence of experiences of shock, in the setting of the contemporary scene, to search for new modes of symbolization and reflection on such experiences and their resonance.
