Abstract

Photoacoustic imaging (PA) is a new image modality, for evaluating optical and mechanical characteristics of tissue. The physical principle consists in the use of electromagnetic radiation to generate acoustic pressure waves, due to photons absorption and subsequently thermal expansion, which are received by ultrasound equipment. Many researches have been developed PA applications using visible light optical spectra. However, only a few studies have reported the use of X-ray photons to produce photoacoustic images and biomedical applications. The X-ray scatter in tissue is much lower than optical photons, which could potentially increase de depth of penetration of PA, increasing, therefore, the range of possible applications. In this project, we aim to investigate PA imaging using X-ray photons to generate PA signals to measure the dose of radiation deposited during a radiation therapy procedure. Moreover, we propose to study PA physical mechanism to develop an acquisition system for PA and to implement computational routines to reconstruct PA image from X-ray beams. Therefore, we intend to provide a dose monitoring system during radiotherapy treatment based on ultrasound and PA. (AU)
