Abstract

Bacteria belonging to Bartonella genus, fastidious gram-negative microorganisms highly specialized in parasitize mammals, are the etiologic agents of Bartonellosis, a disease whose clinical signs vary according to different host species and pathogens involved. Currently, over 30 species within this genus are described throughout the world. The transmission of these organisms is by hematophagous arthropod vectors (fleas, ticks, lice and mosquitos), which is facilitated by the prolonged parasitemia in their vertebrate hosts. The search for domestic and wild vertebrate hosts for Bartonella spp. is much needed, given the zoonotic nature of this group of organisms. Thus, this study aims to investigate, using molecular techniques, the occurrence of Bartonella in rodents and marsupials sampled in southern Mato Grosso Pantanal region, specifically in Nhumirim Embrapa Pantanal farm/CPAP and Nhecolândia region. Spleen samples of trapped animals will be subjected to DNA extraction and subsequent quantitative Real time PCR-based gene nuoG. Positive samples are subjected to standard PCR assays based on the intergenic region of the 16S-23S ribosomal RNA gene (ITS) and the gltA rpoB, ribC, pap-31, Fstz and groEL genes, in order to perform molecular characterization by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis.
