Abstract
Deforestation of the Brazilian Cerrado region has caused major changes in hydrological processes. However, these changes are still poorly understood, but are important for making land management decisions in this region. In this postdoctoral project, I intend to use several hydrometeorological data to develop and improve models in hydrological and soil erosion processes for the Brazilian Cerrado. Thus, I hope to develop, calibrate and validate physical processes models and empirical about water infiltration into the soil, evapotranspiration, canopy interception, and soil erosion for the undisturbed cerrado and the main crops found in this biome. I will use initially data from three experimental sites, where two are placed in the State of São Paulo (Pé de Gigante - PDG e Instituto Arruada Botelho - IAB), and another in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul (Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul - UEMS). Furthermore, I will use remote sensing data to apply the studied models for all the Cerrado region in order to evaluate spatially the main effects of land cover and land use on the hydrological and soil erosion processes. At the end of this study, I hope to: i. the developing, calibrating, and validating physical processes and empirical models to better understanding hydrological and soil erosion processes in the Cerrado; ii. the analysis spatially and temporally of the impacts of the Cerrado deforestation on the water balance and soil erosion; iii. to publishing of the main finds in high-impact scientific journals. In addition, I hope that our results may provide new concepts and conclusions in order to help the land use management decisions and the water security in the Cerrado region. (AU)
