Abstract

This research project aims to study intermetallic compounds with double perovskite structure using synchrotron radiation techniques under high pressures. Our goals are focused on the understanding the structural, electronic and magnetic properties as a function of physical pressure in materials that exhibit strong spin orbit coupling. The evolution of orbital and spin magnetic moment as a function of pressure to the family of compounds (Ca,Sr)2FeReO6 and (Ca,Sr)2LnOsO6 (Ln = rare earths) will be made using the techniques of x- ray magnetic circular/linear dichroism (XMCD and XMLD) and x-ray resonant scattering (XRMS). This study will be particularly challenging because it will involve the development of new instrumentation for utilization of these techniques under high pressures. Parallel to the study of these materials we intend to use a Large volume press to synthesize new compounds of the type (Ca,Sr)2BB'O6 with B=actinide element and B '= 5d metal. Through this project we intend to develop a magnetic phase diagram for compounds type A2BB'O6 helping to better understand this class of materials that has attracted great interest due to their intriguing physical properties and potential technological applications.
