Abstract

The Leucosiidae crabs as well those belonging to the genus Persephona have been little studied although they are widely distributed in the Atlantic. They are commonly caught in sea-bob shrimp trawling (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri) and as bycatch of commercially exploited species, and end up suffering the same impact as these. Environmental factors have been considered extremely important in the distribution and occurrence of species in the marine environment. Among them are the sediment texture, temperature and salinity. The aim of the present study was to characterize the spatio-temporal distribution patterns of Persephona mediterranea and Persephona punctata in Cananéia region, on the southern coast of São Paulo state. It is important to notice that this region is one of the most productive estuarine ecosystems in the world. Samples were collected from July 2012 to June 2014, with the aid of a shrimp trawler equipped with two double-rig nets, in seven points, four in marine area (T1, T2, T3, T4) and three in mar pequeno (estuary) (T5, T6, T7). After capture, the crabs were stored in plastic bags and will be properly identified and measured. Using relevant statistical analyzes we aim to verify the distribution of organisms, being key to the assessment of the possible impacts of fishing and contribute to the mitigation measures.
