Abstract

Echoes of a supposed silence: landscape and urbanization of "Certoens" of the Provinces of Northern and of the State of Maranhão, 1671-1821 search complementary doctoral studies currently conducted at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo (FAU USP), focusing on areas of internalized Bahia, Pernambuco and Maranhão.We propose to analyse the specificities of the construction of the landscape and urbanization processes of the Northern hinterlands from the reading of primary documents (handwritten and cartographic) collected in the main Portuguese archives, interpreting the light of the information emanating policies of the Portuguese crown with direct impact on the internalized territory, internal socioeconomic dynamics to the hinterlands and their cultural and trade with other parts of Brazil, such as Minas Gerais, Goiás and Pará.Indeed, we show that these are "certoens" dynamics and participants in the urban-territorial formation of Brazil, subject little known by the historiography that draw them as empty, stagnant and inert. Therefore, we will focus on the structure and hierarchies of the urban network consisting of "nodes" of various levels and profiles. Landings, chapels, parishes, "julgados", towns and cities, metaphorically, are our echoes expressed in the title of this work.In parallel, we contemplate the material culture, multidisciplinary and geographical scales as forged landscape hermeneutics and urbanization in the hinterland, an area that until recently was considered "peripheral" to the interests of the Portuguese Empire.
