Abstract Introduction: the World Health Organization (WHO) considers diet to be one of the major modifiable risk factors for chronic diseases, which stresses the importance of understanding eating habits and its determinants. However, few studies have explored the characteristics of each meal in representative samples of population surveys, as well as the direct effect of meal quality on the overall quality of dietary intake. Therefore, considering they are in different stages of the nutrition transition and economic development, the purpose of this study is to investigate and compare the nutritional quality of meals consumed in Brazil and United Kingdom (UK). Objective: to characterize and compare the nutritional quality of meals consumed by adults living in Brazil and UK. Subjects and methods: data will be extracted from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS). The NDNS is a cross-sectional nationally representative survey in the UK that aims to gather population-representative data on food consumption, nutrient intakes and nutritional status. For this study, data from individuals aged 19 years and above who provided complete productive interviews will be included, a total of 2000 adults. To different approaches for the identification and evaluation of the lunch meal pattern will be used: (1) hypothesis-driven approach, with a new meal quality index; and (2) hybrid approach, to evaluate of the meal patters using data reduction techniques. The nutritional quality and meal pattern of lunch in UK will be compared with de Brazilian nutritional quality and meal pattern. (AU) | |
