Abstract

The main goal of this research is to discuss the relations between aesthetics and agency among the Matipu, Karib speakers from the Upper Xingu. Based on the ethnography of the production of graphic art among this group, focusing on its use in body paintings, its specific goals are: a) to discuss how the production of graphic motifs may be associated with the processes of the production of the body and the person; b) to understand the particularities of the uses, meanings and effects of the visual artistic production of the Matipu in the context of the graphic and aesthetic common repertoire of the region; c) to investigate how the graphics (and eventually its own base repertoire) have been reinvented on the relationships with the non-indigenous world. It is expected, therefore, to improve the understanding of how the visual arts are involved in the production of sociality in the multi-ethnic and multilingual complex of the Upper Xingu, and to contribute to the discussions on aesthetics, agency and transformation in the Amazon region.
