Abstract

This post-doctoral research proposed to the Graduate Diversitas Program - Study Center of Diversity, Conflict and Intolerance (FFLCH / USP). The relationship between sociology of Norbert Elias and psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud is possible, not only by the influence of Freud Elias, but by the approach of what their thoughts presuppose. I mean, for the sociologist, social structures and personality structures mutually determining. As for psychoanalysis, one can't think of an individual without considering their position in society, and one can't understand the social processes without acknowledging the singular forms that focus on them. This research, by suspending the antithesis that conceives the terms individual and society as separate and autonomous, aims to support the following hypothesis: the civilizing process is a form of culture transmission whose incidence is done on the body. It starts with Elias's proposition of the civilizing process while an inscription that makes social norms and rules operating in individuals in the form of self-regulation and self-control. In turn, psychoanalytic theory provides the foundation for understanding how the body - through the repression of drives and emotions - is the articulating element for culture transmission. Moreover, from the theoretical contributions of Norbert Elias and Sigmund Freud, is intended to demonstrate how this process of culture transmission produces symptoms, that is, it carries with it the opposite of what he wants to transmit.
