Abstract

In bivalve mollusks, the mantle margin, typically organized in three folds, comprises a key-feature to understand the evolutionary radiation of the group through the occupation of diverse niches. In the clade Pteriomorphia, which is largely composed of epifaunal bivalves, the mantle margin is extremely diverse and presumptively associated with the habits and habitats occupied by these organisms. The present research project aims at investigating the morphological diversity of the mantle margin in Pteriomorphia, integrating comparative and functional approaches to infer the evolution of this anatomical region. Hypotheses of homology and evolutionary convergence of pallial characters will be tested within a phylogenetic framework, which will also form a basis to test for correlation between morphology and habitat/life habits. Investigations concerning morphological diversity of the mantle margin are scarce and rarely integrated within an evolutionary context. In addition, several lines of evidence suggest the correlation between the pallial margin and life habit diversification in Bivalvia, highlighting the relevance of the present project as a model for studies on evolution and diversity in the marine benthos. To investigate the anatomy of the mantle margin in the Pteriomorphia, representative species from Pteriomorphian families will be studied through the analysis of specimens deposited in museum collections. The evolution of the mantle margin will be studied by means of reconstructions of character ancestral state based on published phylogenetic trees, testing hypotheses of homology and evolutionary convergence of pallial features, as well as correlation between pallial features and life habits. Additionally, the functional anatomy of the mantle margin in fresh specimens of representative species from the major Pteriomorphian families will be investigated in detail using integrative microscopy techniques to provide basis to understand patterns identified in the previous analysis.
