Abstract

The goal of this research is to understand facets of cultural and social dynamics experienced in São Paulo and Vila do Carmo (Mariana subsequently called), from 1693 to 1755, through the culture material segment : the dress. The sources that I will use for it consist in the Pragmatic Laws set, published between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the inventories and wills produced in both regions, as well as the reports of travelers who visited those locations throughout the eighteenth century. My interest is to reflect on the importance and the social and cultural meanings which the act of dressing the body had in a society`s routine, that had marks of Ancient Regime. Thus, I`ll try to understand the mechanisms of access to such artifacts, their uses in different areas and different social groups. I`ll investigate the relations these individuals had with the objects, also the relationship they had with other individuals and groups, through the movement of such materials elements culture. By the clothes and the relations established each other, it`s possible to think about the uses, habits, representations and feelings related to the image these people were worried to show to the community they lived.
