Abstract The coastal zone of Santa Catarina state is submitted to particular oceanographic and meteorological conditions. The passage of cold fronts over this area influences extreme events of meteorological tides associated to storm waves (storm surges), which can lead to episodes of flooding by sea water and beach erosion causing damage to the coastal zone - especially when associated with astronomical spring tides. Since the sandy beaches are the predominant environments along Santa Catarina's coastline and have high social and economic value due to the variety of activities undertaken at these sites and the high population density in coastal cities, the study of coastal vulnerability becomes of great relevance. This study presents a methodological alternative for the mapping of coastal vulnerability to extreme events of waves and tides, in Santa Catarina state, from the creation of a multicriteria index and the use of a Geographical Information System. The variables incorporated into the index include both physical characteristics, related to damping of marine incident energy on the coast, as socioeconomic components that influence the adaptability of population to coastal impacts. In addition to checking the realistic character of the model by comparing with the bibliographic reference, local analyzes will be performed. The variables chosen for regional analysis will be studied in a greater detail, considering the representativeness of the data at different scales. The identification of the most relevant variables in determining the coastal vulnerability of the state will be obtained through statistical analysis. This study will provide information about the relative predisposition of different sectors of the coastline to be affected by hazards. (AU) | |
