Abstract The object of study of the research proposed in this project is the reading book of Edmondo De Amicis, Cuore - a book that had great international acceptance and significant movement in Brazil where even inspired the development of national books. The interest in analyzing a Reading Book is justified by the fact that this constitute a specific type of school literature widely used in the late nineteenth and mid-twentieth in Brazilian primary schools and had the mission to educate and civilize students, namely children. To collate the dialogue between the discourse about childhood, produced and published by the scientific field in the period chosen for investigation, and literary discourse, present in the school's books for children has as objective the understanding of childhood and representation of the educational programs conveyed through these books. Considering the contributions of cultural history, this research will take as methodological approach the analysis of the book materiality of aspects as proposed by Chartier (1990; 1994; 2001), by analyzing the production process of adoption and circulation of this cultural artifact, its contents and the its images associated with the pedagogical conceptions and educational innovation policies and especially the child representation. The analysis will seek foundation in childhood history and more specifically the history of childhood in Brazil. It is intended to propose an investigation of ways to idealize and represent childhood made through speeches and practices, considering the relationship between the process of schooling and the production of the conception of childhood in modern societies.
