Abstract

This project is a way to broaden the aims of a doctoral project in progress, called "Family Therapy as Expanded Clinic in Mental Health Care". This doctoral project aims to analyze the approximation of a practice of family therapy to the notion of expanded clinic in mental health care. The present project is proposed as a research internship abroad, and it adds a new specific aim to the broader study: to describe how, from within the particularities of the therapeutic conversation, therapists and families work out the expansion of the domains of family therapy clinical practice. Specifically, it aims to describe the conversational resources to which therapists and families turn in those moments when an intervention fits the description of the expanded clinic that has emerged through the review of literature. The material to be analyzed is a database of the transcripts of 33 family therapy sessions (three family cases) that were carried out in a Psychiatric Day Hospital in Brazil. These materials will be analyzed drawing on techniques from social constructionist discourse analysis, which understands language in its performative character. This analysis will focus on understanding how the expansion of clinical practices is crafted at the most local of levels: the clinical encounters in health services. It ultimately aims at describing practical therapeutic resources for those professionals who are interested in working within a critical and transformative frame in Brazilian mental health care, i.e., an expanded clinic.
