Abstract

To reflect upon one's own trade, to denaturalize historical knowledge and to think it as a product of men and history are a few of the attitudes that are intimately linked to the emergence of history of the historiography. Regarding this area of study, the current project originates from the following general question: "how was history written in the 19th century?" - With this intent, the writing of history in 1800's France (1827-1898) shall be taken as subject by means of studying writings in which historical knowledge has been intended for itself, that is, by reading texts in which 19th century's historiographers pondered about their own trade, prescribing and crafting the rules, limits, procedures and historiographical protocols. Thus, with the overall purpose of interpreting the conditions related to the emergence of 19th century's French historiography, are the texts named, in this project, meta-historiographical, with the intent of describing this self-reflective practice and studying the truths in dispute during said period's writing of history. Starting from a roster of historiographers composed by the "masters" of French history of the 19th century, the current project proposes, as an initial milestone, the year of 1827, due to the publishing of history works by Thierry and Michelet and, as the final landmark, the work Introduction aux études historiques (1898), by Langlois and Seignobos. Hence, by assembling a corpus of texts that discussed 1800's historiographical protocols, it is aimed to describe the images that these historiographers built for the sake of knowledge itself. It is premised that meta-historiography was an imperative practice for the composition of modern historical knowledge, establishing "love for truth" as a fundamental pact for historiography, which crafted, in the 1800's France, the "century of history".
