Abstract

KPC-2 producing Klebsiella pneumoniae belonging to ST437 is considered predominant in Brazil. This ST has also been reported in the water of major rivers of Sao Paulo City, rivers Tiete and Pinheiros, demonstrating how these microorganisms can get out the hospital and come to the environment facilitating their spread. This leads to a concern about how the treatment and dumping of such effluent are made, and if the hospitals have this concern or some kind of plan to prevent the circulation of multiresistant microorganisms in the environment. Thus, it is very important not only know the genetic diversity but also search new and more effective tools for monitoring and understanding the spread of these multiresistant microorganisms. The whole genome sequencing allows a more comprehensive analysis of the structure and content of microbial genomes. This type of sequencing is also useful in investigating the spread of plasmids involved in the transmission of resistance genes and in the genetic differentiation that enables the occupation of these microorganisms in different ecological niches. The aims of this study are to analyze and compare through the whole genome sequencing, three isolates of KPC-2 producing Klebsiella pneumoniae, belonging to the ST437, 1 strain isolated in hospital and 2 in the environment. All strains were isolated in Sao Paulo City in 2011. Strains isolated from the environment were one isolated from Tiete River and the other one isolated in Pinheiros River. Clinical isolate was obtained from a hospital located near to the point of the collection of environmental isolates. Sequencing will be made by using Illumina platform.
