Abstract

Invasive fungal infections are an important public healt problem, and yeast from Candida group are one of the main cause of hospital infections and also frequent cause of blood infections. Candida species can live as comensal in healthy organisms, but may cause systemic infections in immunocompromised patients and its incidence has been increasing during the last decades. More than 17 Candida species have been associated with human infection; however, more than 90% of the invasive infections are caused by C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis. Several virulence factors are responsible to make Candida species pathogens, such as the production of enzymes that damage host tissues, the ability to adhere to host tissues, and biofilm production. The ability of Candida species to for biofilm has an important clinical impact due to the increase on the microbial resistance and resistance to the host`s immunologic system. The present study aims to evaluate the impact of biofilm formation on the antifungal resistance profile of Candida species isolated from candidemia episodes from the Faculty of Medicine Hosital of Ribeirão Preto Hospital- FMRP-USP.To fulfill our goal, the ability to form biofilm by the isolates will be evaluated and their antifungal sensibility will be tested in planctonic cells and biofilms. In addition, data from medical report will be analysed in order to make an epidemiologycal approach of the candidemia. The study intends to establish antigungal resistance and sensibility limits, and indicate critical ponits to control the dissemination of Candida spp. in the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto Hospital and in Brazil.
